Description
Three vintage primitive Navajo wool tapestries depicting women in various poses. These are absolutely charming collectible American Indian textiles. Acquired at a gallery in Santa Fe in 1999 (condition issues indicated above were present when purchased--not atypical for old wool textiles.) They are woven in wool yarn with a beige field color and variety of design colors including dark brown, grey, red, orange. All have slightly irregular edges (see photos). Approximate measurements: Long tapestry with forward facing woman is 15"x34". Woman with arrow design is 14"x14" . Woman with grey striped skirt is 13.5"x14". Artist unknown so therefore I do not know where these technically rank along the spectrum of Navajo weaving skill. These are samplers and could be as old as 1940s but not certain. They are very collectible. This auction includes all three tapestries as pictured. They would be beautiful framed together. Please note this is a hand-made textile. Hand-made textiles are not "perfect" nor are they rigid. They have natural intrinsic variations and irregularities in yarn, color, texture, and weave. Because they are estimated to be old, there is likely some color fading along with the condition issues listed above. Nevertheless, I think the colors are still lovely.
