This is a:Rare SIGNED April 17, 1966 Rocky Marciano, Steve Acunto Testimonial Dinner Dance Poster! This is signed by the hall of famer Steve Acunto.
Here is some additional information about Mr. Acunto.
In more than 50 years since the article "Hiding Talent Under a Sweatshirt" was published, Steven B. Acunto idealistically lived the boxing life. He trained on the heavy bag and on the speed bag, and he regularly shadow boxed, swam, and rode a stationary bicycle. Even in his later years, former professional boxer Acunto participated in ring demonstrations with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano and Willy Pep in the production of a video cassette and other mediums. And for more than four decades, Acunto was one of the foremost boxing instructor's in the world.
Acunto was the Head Boxing Coach at Westchester Community College, where he developed and taught the only boxing classes for college credit in existence. He has also taught pugilism at Fairfield University, Concordia College, Sarah Lawrence College, YMCAs and at the Purchase Community House. In addition, he traveled the country conducting hundreds of clinics and seminars on the "sweet science".
Acunto was a member of the New York state athletic commission since 1945, serving as commissioner as well. In 1969, with Rocky Marciano, Acunto founded the American Association for the improvement of boxing. He later became President Emeritus and Chairman of the Board of that prestigious organization.
In 1988, Acunto was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame, and in 1998, he was inducted into the New Jersey boxing Hall of Fame. He ultimately taught the fistic way to more then 8,000 young men. Of the students, one became a world champion, several were leading contenders and many became amateur champions. He lived with his wife Mercedes in Mount Vernon, New York. They had one son, three daughters, four grandchildren and a wealth of boxing memories.
Articles about Acunto and his activities have appeared in SPORT magazine, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, the San Fransisco Chronicle, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Boxing Illustrated and a host of other publications.
What was most important to Pugilistic Professor Acunto was the personal plaudits in his continuing role as a person who imparted boxing knowledge in the most classic of ways; he taught boxing as the art of self defense, as the most basic yet sophisticated of sports, and as a series of life – enriching skills.
The poster is on cardboard stock and has missing upper corners as can be seen in the first picture. Very few of these were printed as they were not for retail sale and maybe a handful have survived for 55 years! It is likely to be the only surviving signed one. This piece relating to one of boxing's all time greats is very difficult to find and would look incredible framed and presented. It is a must for the Rocky Marciano fan or the boxing historian/fan in general.
Will be shipped framed. Frame is functional but you may want to switch it into a nicer frame.
