    Description

Lovely, detailed artisan-made doll, by Cheryl Vilbert, with blue eyes & blond hair swept up into a bun with cascading bologna curls falling down the back to shoulder length.
Her face is hand painted with delicate features.
This doll is dressed in a really lovely mid-1800s outfit, appropriate for outdoor promenade or travel. Her full skirt is red and green plaid cotton, complete with numerous layers of white, lace-trimmed petticoats underneath. She wears a white flannel jacket over a white blouse. The jacket features black trim. She has a sweet matching hat on her head with red trim and sheer black and white ribbon bows. She also has a matching drawstring purse over her wrist.
She has white pantaloons underneath trimmed with white lace.
Her black high boots are painted on.
I have not been able to determine exactly what Cheryl made her dolls from. She refers to them as having a "porcelain-like" finish, so it seems clear they are not made of porcelain. My guess is some type of china-like clay, which she hand paints after firing. This doll's head, neck, and upper bust are a solid piece, so her head is stationary. Her
forearms & hands, and lower legs & feet are also clay
. Her upper arms, upper legs, torso, and waist are cloth-covered wire. As a result, you can bend her arms to pose them and bend her legs (although her very full skirt does not allow her to sit very gracefully, as her petticoats force her skirt to stay stick straight out). She is designed to be a standing doll. She does not come with a doll stand since her full skirt and flat shoes allow her to stand without assistance.
She bears her original Vilbert tags inside her petticoats. One reads "Cheryl A. Vilbert" with "1982" handwritten to indicate when the doll was made. The other is a handwritten tag that reads "Charity 1860" to indicate the name of the doll and what year her fashion is designed from.
Cheryl's dolls always have very sweet faces and features, but it is her fashion that wins the prize in most of her works: incredible attention to period detail and accuracy. This doll's outfit is right out of a Godey's fashion print!
For those who like to know about the artist (from Cheryl’s customer communication):
Cheryl Vilbert Crawford was an IGMA Fellow in doll-making. Every one of Cheryl's dolls was entirely Cheryl’s own design and was always hand-crafted by Cheryl. They were molded from her own design, and each had a fine satin, porcelain like finish. The bodies were wrapped wire, so they were poseable. Cheryl hand sewed the finest cottons, wools, and silks. The hair was always pure silk. Each doll was produced in a limited edition of not more than 5 dolls. They were carefully costumed in periods ranging from the 12th century to the 1920s. Her costuming would include hairstyle, jewelry, hats, and accessories. Great care was always taken to create an authentic historical costume.
